The world of European and American rappers: full of drugs, violence and depression
Along with the development of Rap music, audiences also witnessed a chaotic picture full of addiction, drugs, and death of many famous artists.
Sudden deaths
As people from the slums, rappers often have potentially unstable personal lives. Different personalities, disagreements, impulsive actions, and dangerous relationships have led to tragic endings for many singers at the peak of their careers.
The death case of rappers Biggie and Tupac is still unsolved.
In the late 90s, the passing of two hip-hop icons, Biggie Smalls and Tupac Shakur, shocked the Rap music community. Biggie-Tupac were originally close friends. Because of conflicts in their careers, the two rappers became sworn enemies.
On September 13, 1996, Tupac was shot from a passing car in Las Vegas. 6 months later, it was Biggie’s turn to be assassinated. On March 9, 1997, while sitting in a car parked on Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles, the 24-year-old male singer was shot dead after four shots. Like Tupac’s, Biggie’s murder sparked many conspiracy theories. Many people believe that the deaths of the two rappers reflect the feud between the East Coast and the West Coast in the hip-hop world, involving the record labels Bad Boy Records in New York and Death Row Records in Los Angeles. After more than 2 decades, this gangster-like murder still remains unsolved.
Rapper XXXTentacion was shot dead at the peak of his career.
On June 18, 2018, the American entertainment industry received shocking news when rapper XXXTentacion, one of the world’s most famous young rappers, was shot dead. The male singer was approached by two armed men when he had just left the motorbike dealership and was sitting in the car. Even sadder, on the same day, June 18, another young rapper, Jimmy Wopon, was also suddenly shot to death in a car in the Hill district of Pittsburgh.
Addiction, depression, prison
Those are the dark sides behind the free and liberal music career of a series of famous rappers. Not only are they remembered by the public through their hit songs, many rappers are also associated with images of addiction and imprisonment. Many people believe that rappers with “many talents and many flaws” often turn to stimulants to get inspired to compose and sublimate their music. However, the price to pay is very high.
Mac Miller and Ariana Grande.
In recent days, the music-loving community was shocked when rapper Mac Miller, Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend, passed away. The information was confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner on September 7. According to TMZ, the cause of death was most likely due to a drug overdose.
Before that, Miller struggled with substance abuse for many years. He openly shared his drug use when he was 15 years old. After that, he had to struggle to get rid of his dependence on stimulants. In May of this year, the male rapper crashed his G-Wagon into a power pole in a state of unconsciousness. He was also charged with hit-and-run driving. Police arrested Miller at his home but he was later released on bail. Shortly before his death, Mac Miller repeatedly spoke about depression and psychological troubles on social networks. The last MV of his career, Self care, also mentioned death many times.
Rap king Eminem.
When mentioning Eminem, the audience remembers the talent of a “hip-hop king” and also remembers his “crazy” life. Eminem’s personal life is rarely quiet. Not only did Eminem have a tense relationship with his biological mother, he also had a psychological crisis and conflict with his ex-wife. The male singer was twice married and divorced from Kim Mathers, his daughter’s mother. According to sources, once distraught, the rap star tried to kill his wife. This intention was included in the lyrics of 97 Bonnie and Clyde (1999).
Eminem also had a past of drug addiction and near death, before overcoming the mud. In 2015, Eminem revealed that he almost lost his life after a drug overdose in 2007. That was when his addiction became so severe that he took up to 20 pills a day.
In an interview, Eminem said: “In 2007, I overdosed. I used to take pills wherever I could. I took whatever people gave me, and then I had to be hospitalized. I weighed almost 230 pounds. I’m not sure how I gained so much weight, but I think it was because of the coating on Vicodin and Valium, the drugs I’d been taking for years. passed, left a hole in my stomach, and to avoid stomach pain, I had to constantly eat, and I ate a lot.”
In 2013, famous rapper Lil Wayne was taken to the emergency room at Cedars-Sinai medical center in Los Angeles in an unconscious state. A friend confirmed that Lil Wayne drank too much of a homemade drug. including drugs, sleeping pills, cough syrup mixed with soda and spirits. This mixed product makes users feel refreshed and sleepy, but at the same time can also lead to drug overdose because of too much use. Before that, for three consecutive years, 2007, 2008 and 2009, he was also arrested for drug use. The 16-time Grammy-nominated rapper also spent 8 months in prison for illegal weapons possession.
Another famous name, Kanye West, has been dealing with paranoia and depression for a long time. In 2016, Kim Kardashian’s husband had to be hospitalized for treatment for a nervous concussion due to overwork, leading to constant insomnia. Doctors determined that he showed signs of depression. In June 2016, the American rapper confirmed that he had bipolar disorder. He also mentioned this in the song Yikes.
Not only addiction and depression, rappers are also involved in noisy incidents related to parties, alcohol, and girls. In June, a girl filed a rape complaint against star Chris Brown and rapper Lowell Grissom Jr. According to the lawsuit, the girl named Jane Doe said she attended a party with Chris Brown and his friends at a nightclub. After that, Chris’s friends confiscated her phone and invited her to come back to his house to get her phone back. Here, Chris Brown and his guests used a large amount of ecstasy and marijuana before committing rape.
Drowning in violence
XXXTentacion, real name Jahseh Dwayne Onfroy, the rapper who was shot dead on June 18, was a “small” person, but he was always associated with violence. “I have been fighting since I was a child. I used to beat many classmates at school, saying many obscene words just to hear my mother scream or talk to me” – XXXTentacion said.
In high school, Onfroy was arrested for armed robbery, possession of the anesthetic painkiller oxycodone and resisting law enforcement. While in detention, he also brutally beat a gay prisoner.
Entering the music industry, XXXTentacion achieved much success and was considered a potential young rapper, but his personal life was full of scandals related to violence. In March this year, XXXTentacion was accused of brutally assaulting his girlfriend Geneva Ayala, who was pregnant at the time. In addition to beating his girlfriend, XXXTentacion also made a noise when arguing with concertgoers and hurling profanities at senior rapper Drake.
The abuse of Rihanna caused Chris Brown’s career to suffer for a long time.
Not only XXXTentacion, senior names like 50 Cent, Chris Brown… have also been in trouble with the law when committing violent acts. 50 Cent was known for a dark past with bloody massacres between gangsters. He was shot 9 times in 2000. Meanwhile, Chris Brown was very famous for abusing his ex-girlfriend Rihanna. On February 8, 2009, right before the night of the 51st Grammy Awards, Rihanna suddenly canceled her performance at the last minute without an explanation. Just a few hours later, TMZ published a series of shocking photos. Rihanna was assaulted by Chris until her lip was torn and her face was full of bruises.
This is just one of the times Rihanna was assaulted during the year the two were in love. Chris is said to continuously engage in violent, uncontrollable behavior with his girlfriend. As a result of what Chris did to Rihanna, the male singer was sentenced by the court to 5 years of probation, 6 months of community service, and had to stay 45 meters away from his ex-girlfriend, except during performances.
