PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — A Petersburg man was sentenced to over 10 years in prison on Wednesday for dealing illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl.
On Wednesday, May 22, 37-year-old Richard Arthur Jones of Petersburg was sentenced to 10 years and six months in prison for possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine and heroin, according to the Eastern District of Virginia’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. He previously pleaded guilty on Jan. 4.
According to court documents, the Virginia State Police 1B Task Force “conducted five controlled purchases” of heroin, fentanyl and cocaine from Jones between Sept. 9, 2022, and Feb. 8, 2023. On the last three occasions, the task force conducted these transactions at Jones’ apartment.

When the task force executed a search warrant on that apartment on Feb. 16, 2023, Jones reportedly threw a plastic bag off of his balcony. This bag got stuck in a tree and was later retrieved by law enforcement.
Court documents state that, inside the bag, law enforcement found over 300 grams of meth and nearly 100 grams of heroin. From the apartment itself, about 32.5 grams of a fentanyl-heroin mixture and another 21.14 grams of methamphetamine were recovered.
Additionally, law enforcement reportedly found a .40 caliber handgun inside of a Gucci crossbody.
