The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have thanked the people of Scotland as they wrapped up their royal tour, with Prince William saying, “I am shaped by this place”.

“Catherine and I came here to listen, so we might learn more about your challenges, but also, to learn of your hopes and aspirations, so that we may serve alongside you with the combination of humility and conviction that speaks so powerfully to us,” the Duke of Cambridge said in a speech during the Closing Ceremony of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Prince William travelled to Scotland on Friday in his role as Lord High Commissioner representing his grandmother Queen Elizabeth. He was joined by his wife on Monday.

They’ve embarked on a major charm offensive, carrying out dozens of engagements across the country.

Their final day saw Prince William and Kate visit Starbank Park in Edinburgh to hear about the work of Fields in Trust, which aims to reduce inequality of access to green spaces in the UK.

Prince William is President of Fields, a role he took over from his grandfather the Duke of Edinburgh, who had been involved with the organisation since 1948.

Prince William and Kate helped to plant seeds within the 125-year-old garden, with the help of schoolchildren and teens working towards their Duke of Edinburgh bronze award.

The duchess wore a green Massimo Dutti blazer, a Jigsaw polka-dot shirt and a pair of white Superga trainers.

Her cropped trousers were a change from the skinny jeans we’ve been used to seeing of late, with Kate choosing looser fitting ankle-skimming style.

Kate wore a gold necklace by Daniella Draper featuring the initials G, C and L representing her children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

For the couple’s next engagement Kate changed into a Ralph Lauren jumper at the Craiglockhart Tennis Centre where she was there in her role as Patron of the Lawn Tennis Association.

The couple joined a class from Canal View Primary school in a set of exercises from the LTA Youth program including hopscotch, floor tennis and team cones, created to help make tennis accessible to as many children as possible.

The Duchess of Cambridge carried out a solo engagement before the Scotland tour came to an end, meeting with five-year-old Mila Sneddon, who she had previously spoken with via the phone.

Kate was finally able to meet Mila in person a year after her portrait was chosen as a finalist in the duchess’s Hold Still lockdown photography exhibition.

The photo was taken by Mila’s mother and showed the little girl, who has cancer, kissing the window as her father stood outside during coronavirus pandemic lockdowns.

Kate kept her promise to wear a pink “princess costume” and chose a $1050 silk shirt dress from ME+EM for the occasion.

Little Mila’s face lit up when Kate entered the room at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh, who was also dressed head-to-toe in pink.

In their second last engagement before departing Scotland Prince William and Kate attended the Closing Ceremony of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

Kate wore a powder-blue dress coat and matching heels, accessorised with a floral brooch, last seen at the Commonwealth Day service in 2018.

In William’s speech to the assembly he reflected on their time in Scotland saying, “It was wonderful to be back in St Andrews and walk down memory lane together”.

“I am shaped by this place. The abiding affection I feel for it is rooted in my experience of its everyday life – in people, relationships, and its ethic of neighbourliness.”

He also referenced the aged-care home resident who asked William for a kiss earlier in the week.

“Betty, the ninety-six year old star of the show at Queen’s Bay Lodge, who is full of beans despite the horrid year she’s had. Betty’s certainly got my number,” William said.

Kate and William’s final engagement saw them attend a Beating Retreat by the Massed Pipes and Drums of the Combined Cadet Force in Scotland.

In Scotland William and Kate are titled as the as the Earl and Countess of Stathearn.
