ceShowbiz – Jon Turteltaub, director of the original “National Treasure” films, has confirmed that a script for “National Treasure 3” is currently being written. The film is expected to reunite Nicolas CageJustin Bartha and Diane Kruger, who played historian Ben Gates and his companions in the previous installments.

Turteltaub stated that a “very, very good writer” is penning the script, and if it meets expectations, the movie will move into production. Regarding the story, Turteltaub remained tight-lipped but hinted at the return of Sean Bean‘s villainous Ian Howe from the first film. He teased that Howe may be “out of prison now or about to be.”

Despite mixed critical reviews, the “National Treasure” franchise remains popular with audiences. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has previously expressed hope for a third film, while Cage himself has said he is surprised Disney has not greenlit it yet.

However, Turteltaub acknowledged the challenges of making a sequel after so many years. “People are both getting older and less interested… Our culture has changed a lot since the first movie was made,” he said.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the cast and crew are enthusiastic about revisiting the franchise. “There’s no one who doesn’t want to make it,” Turteltaub asserted. “We all have tremendous affection not just for it but for each other.”
