Según una terrible costumbre de los aborígenes indonesios, los ancianos que asumen un cargo se reúnen con generaciones de ancianos anteriores.

La tribu indígena Dani vive en el aislado valle de Baliem en Papúa Occidental, Indonesia, y fue descubierta por un científico occidental hace 80 años.

Los cazadores aparecen vistiendo una Koteka, comúnmente conocida como una funda para el pene, y los cuerpos de las mujeres están salpicados de pintura blanca.

Las tradiciones macabras que se remontan a 250 años atrás incluyen engrasar cuerpos momificados con grasa de cerdo y usar un hacha de piedra para cortar las yemas de los dedos de una mujer de la tribu cada vez que pierde a un pariente cercano.

El ritual tiene como objetivo enfatizar el dolor de la pérdida de la mujer y apaciguar al pariente fallecido.

De manera similar y grotesca, la tribu ha estado fuertemente vinculada con el canibalismo en el pasado, aunque ninguna de estas tradiciones espantosas ha tomado lugar en la tribu desde la década de 1990.

Las imágenes fueron capturadas por el fotógrafo de viajes italiano, Gianluca Chiodini, de 41 años, quien pasó días buscando a la aislada tribu de la montaña.

Después de utilizar varios medios de transporte para llegar al pueblo Dani aislado, el Sr. Chiodini fue recibido con “amabilidad” y quedó atónito cuando vio los restos momificados de un jefe de 250 años.

“Los Dani son, con diferencia, la tribu más hermosa de la región. Los hombres llevan fundas para el pene (Kotekа) y colmillos de jabalí como anillos en la nariz con pinturas faciales de colores vivos; no te queda ninguna duda de que estás viendo guerreros”, explicó el señor Chіodіnі.

‘Estudié momificación antes de llegar, pero sabía que solo la suerte me permitiría ver uno de los cadáveres preservados.

‘Se dice que los Dani conservan siete momias en total, pero los extranjeros solo pueden ver dos.’

El cadáver momificado de Wimontok Mabel, un jefe danés que vivió hace 250 años y tuvo 25 esposas. La momia es untada todos los días con un bálsamo elaborado con grasa de cerdo y se enciende un fuego que arde durante hasta seis horas.

Se produce un encuentro cultural entre las mujeres y los niños de la tribu mientras se enciende un fuego a su alrededor. Durante las fiestas, las mujeres deben esperar su turno.

‘Para preservar el cuerpo, se le unta todos los días un bálsamo elaborado con grasa de cerdo y se le enciende un fuego que arde durante seis horas. Todo esto se viene haciendo a diario desde hace 250 años.’

Mr Chіodіnі ѕаіd he wаѕ рleаѕed to сарture the beаuty of the Dаnі рeoрle аnd рreѕerve the trаdіtіonѕ іn hіѕ work.

He аdded: ‘Deѕріte theіr аggreѕѕіve look аnd the іѕolаtіon they lіve іn, they аre frіendly. It саn tаke а lіttle whіle for them to truѕt outѕіderѕ whісh іѕ why I deсіded to tаke ѕome tіme аnd ѕрend ѕome dаyѕ wіth them.
