There are a number of stars who have chosen not to drink — and shared their experience with the decision.

While there are celebrities who no longer imbibe because they are sober, other famous faces have chosen not to imbibe for a myriad of personal and professional reasons. Take Blake Lively, for example. Though the actress portrayed fictional wild child Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl and played a martini-drinking mom in A Simple Favor, the Age of Adaline star simply has no interest in booze.

“I don’t drink,” she told Allure in September 2012, adding that she’s “never” done drugs either.

Another (mostly) nondrinker is Kim Kardashian. As the reality star’s younger sister Khloé Kardashian stated in January 2016, “Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever. Pregnant or not, she’s just never been into it.”

Though the Skims founder has since shared snapshots featuring cocktails from time to time, she still has a very limited relationship with alcohol. Insiders have said the Keeping Up With the Kardashians star doesn’t like the taste of booze, but she will, on occasion, sip on a cocktail when celebrating a pal or family member’s birthday.

For Jennifer Lopez, the decision to ditch booze is beauty-related. As she candidly declared in 2003: “I think it ruins your skin.”

Miranda Cosgrove

“I’ve never been drunk in my entire life. Crazy,” the iCarly alum shared on an episode of the “Good Guys” podcast in December 2023. “I’ve never even been buzzed. I’ve sipped things before, but, like, two sips.”

Cosgrove continued: “I think it started off because I was always the designated driver when I went out with my friends, and I sort of liked taking on that role and got used to it and just kind of stuck with it forever. But yeah, no, I’m open to drinking. I’m still planning on it at some point … even though I’m 30. I should’ve done it on my birthday, my 30th.”

Kelly Ripa

The All My Children alum revealed during an episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan in January 2020 that though she once drank, she stopped when cohost Ryan Seacrest joined the morning talk show in May 2017. The decision followed a turbulent few months for the star, who was shocked by previous cohost Michael Strahan’s surprise exit from the program roughly one year earlier. “It’s amazing,” she said of her alcohol-free life.

Jada Pinkett Smith

“I haven’t consumed alcohol in 13-plus years,” the Red Table Talk host told Us Weekly in August 2010.

Kim Kardashian

The KKW Beauty founder’s sister Khloé Kardashian, confirmed to ELLE in January 2016 that her sibling doesn’t imbibe. “Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever,” she declared. “Pregnant or not, she’s just never been into it.” These days, the Selfish author has loosened up a bit and will drink occasionally.

Zendaya

When the Euphoria star turned 21 in September 2017, she marked the occasion sans alcohol. “Just because I’m now the legal drinking age, doesn’t mean I’m going to start throwing ’em back. I don’t plan to start drinking,” she explained on her app at the time. “My life is too stressful to need help with relaxing by having a cocktail. This industry is way too nuts for me to not be in control of myself and my decisions, so I just don’t want to introduce drinking! Plus, I don’t want drinking to become a vice. Why try something if you don’t need it?!”

Blake Lively

Though the Gossip Girl alum star’s husband, Ryan Reynolds, owns a liquor label called Aviation Gin, the actress isn’t an alcohol fan. “I don’t drink. I’ve never tried a drug,” she told Allure in September 2012.

Jennifer Lopez

The Hustlers star forgoes alcohol in the name of beauty. “I think it ruins your skin,” she told InStyle in 2003. Still, that doesn’t mean she won’t play along when need be. “Of course, during celebratory toasts, everybody’s like, ‘You can’t toast with water!’ So I’ll toast with alcohol and just take a sip,” she explained.

Anne Hathaway

The Modern Love star revealed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in January 2019 that she’s stopped drinking for the foreseeable future. “I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years,” she explained at the time. “I’m going to stop drinking while my son is in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it and he’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings.”

Kristin Davis

The Sex and the City alum said goodbye to alcohol when she was in her 20s in order to focus on her school work and burgeoning career. “I realized it was not going to end well. I got into the acting program, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn’t doing so well in my classes,” she told Marie Claire U.K. in May 2008. “I thought, ‘Do you know what? It’s going to be one or the other. I can’t really have both.’”

The model and reality TV host has never been a frequent drinker. “I feel like I’ve been very lucky because I don’t really have an addictive personality,” she told Forbes in March 2011. “I’ve never had any drugs, and I had a little taste of alcohol when I was 12 years old, but that’s about it.”

The Oscar winner has also never been that intrigued by the idea of imbibing. “I’ve never had a drink in my life,” she told Chelsea Handler in October 2013, “I’ve never been interested. Nobody ever believes it.”
