However, while the Smiths’ marriage has been laid in front of the public like an exposed wound to be scabbed, the Bad Boys star has some insightful advice to share on relationships after being in one for well over two decades now.

Will Smith’s Eye-Opening Take On Navigating Relationships

From infidelity rumors to the infamous 2022 Oscar debacle, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith have endured a roller coaster ride of a journey throughout their relationship. The Hollywood couple tied the knot in 1997 and their marriage has been laid bare to the public’s scrutiny ever since.

Just last year, Pinkett Smith, 52, disclosed in an NBC interview that she and her husband have been separated since 2016 but haven’t filed for divorce yet, and from the looks of it, don’t plan to either. At least not anytime soon (via The New York Times). Despite the uphill battle to get their marriage back on track, however, the pair have often gushed over each other in talk shows and interviews.

In a recent conversation with Bad Boys co-star, Martin Lawrence, Smith, 55, offered the greatest piece of relationship advice that he’s learned after being with Pinkett Smith since the ’90s, emphasizing the gravity of making yourself happy rather than dumping that responsibility on someone else and vice versa (via Complex).

It’s impossible to make a person happy. Don’t even play the game. And don’t try to have a person make you happy. You have to discover your happiness and cultivate your happiness on your own and they have to cultivate theirs on their own, and you come together, sharing the happiness that you have versus trying to get happiness from them.

The Oscar-winning actor also added that after following the golden rule of taking control of his happiness, he has seen a significant improvement in his relationships.

Although they’ve been through their fair share of ups and downs, the couple shares as unbreakable a bond as ever, and Smith knows that his wife will be there for him come hell or high water.

At a screening of his latest action film, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, the Suicide Squad star told Entertainment Tonight that Pinkett Smith is “one of the most gangsta ride-or-die’s” people in his life.

It’s funny, I was just talking about this, I have always been blessed that there has never been a time in my life when I didn’t look to the side and have a ride or die right there. Jada is one of the most gangsta ride-or-die’s I’ve ever had.

The Smiths recently made their first red carpet appearance together during the Los Angeles premiere of Bad Boys: Ride or Die, after news about their seven-year-long-separation broke (via Page Six).
