Wemby treatment? Fans compare Caitlin Clark’s situation to Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama’s in San Antonio
Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have yet to notch their first win of the 2024 WNBA season. Fans have begun comparing Clark’s situation to San Antonio Spurs newcomer Victor Wembanyama, the Rookie of the Year, as the Fever suffered their fourth consecutive loss, narrowly falling to the Connecticut Sun on Monday.
The game was close throughout, but it could have gone to overtime if Aaliyah Boston had made her layup attempt to tie it. Instead, she missed, and the Sun secured an 88-84 victory.
Fans couldn’t help but liken Clark’s predicament to Wembanyama’s. Despite Wembanyama’s never-before-seen skills and dominance, he couldn’t turn things around for the Spurs, who ended the season with a 22-60 record. One fan remarked:
“They’re giving her the Wemby treatment.”
Wembanyama averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds and 3.9 assists in 71 games this season. He won the Rookie of the Year award unanimously, beating the OKC Thunder rookie big man Chet Holmgren.
Some fans criticized Boston for missing the layup that would have forced overtime, noting that she was the top pick in last year’s draft.
However, others defended her, noting that the shot was heavily contested and difficult to make.

With the win, the Connecticut Sun improved to a 3-0 record. The Sun next face the Minnesota Lynx, while the Fever start a three-game Western Conference road trip against the Seattle Storm on Wednesday.
Caitlin Clark scores 17 in Fever’s 4th straight loss
Despite the defeat, Caitlin Clark had a strong showing for the Fever, scoring 17 points on 11 shots, hitting three 3-pointers and adding five assists and three rebounds.
Kelsey Mitchell also contributed 17 points and five assists, while NaLyssa Smith, Temi Fagbenle and Aaliyah Boston scored 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Alyssa Thomas led the Sun with a game-high 24 points, 14 rebounds, and nine assists, while DeWanna Bonner added 22 points. Tyasha Harris (16 points) and DiJonai Carrington (14 points, six rebounds) combined for 30 points for the Sun.
The Fever had trouble with turnovers, committing 17 in total. However, the Sun couldn’t fully capitalize, as the Fever outscored them in points off turnovers, 22-13. The Fever also had an advantage in points in the paint, 48-42.
Caitlin Clark, who made three of her seven three-point attempts, accounted for half of the Fever’s total 3-pointers. The Fever shot 6-of-20 from beyond the arc.
