sugar bandits director

Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios have tapped Italian director Stefano Sollima to helm the high-octane action-thriller ‘Sugar Bandits.’

Previously, Will Smith was announced as the lead for “Sugar Bandits,” an action-thriller based on Chuck Hogan’s novel “Devils in Exile.” The story centers on a former special forces soldier (played by Smith) leading an elite vigilante squad on a mission to eradicate the drug trade in Boston. Screenplay duties will be handled by Hogan, with more casting announcements to come.

AGC International and CAA Media Finance are on board for the film’s global distribution rights, with negotiations continuing at Cannes as the production gears up for a fall start.

In collaboration with Westbrook Studios, Will Smith and Jon Mone will produce “Sugar Bandits,” with Ryan Shimazaki overseeing production. Stuart Ford takes the reins for AGC Studios, which is providing full financing, while Richard Abate of 3 Arts Entertainment joins as a producer. Stefano Sollima’s producing partners Gina Gardini and Ludovico Purgatori will also contribute as executive and co-producers, respectively.

Overseeing negotiations for AGC Studios is their EVP of Legal & Business Affairs, Anant Tamirisa.

Hogan’s novel “Devils in Exile,” brings to life a gripping tale set in Boston. The story revolves around Neal Maven, an Iraq War veteran facing limited job prospects upon his return. Frustrated with the lack of opportunities, Maven joins forces with fellow soldiers to take matters into their own hands.

The narrative unfolds as this group of veterans forms an elite, vigilante squad with a singular mission – dismantling the drug trade in Boston. However, their journey takes unexpected turns, revealing that the situation is far more complex and perilous than they initially thought. As the team delves into the criminal underworld, they confront challenges that test their loyalty, resilience, and the very ideals they set out to uphold.

Stefano Sollima is a renowned Italian filmmaker known for his work in both film and television. He directed the gripping crime thriller “Suburra” and contributed to the acclaimed Italian crime drama “Gomorrah.” In Hollywood, Sollima directed “Sicario: Day of the Soldado” and “Without Remorse,” showcasing his talent for intense and gripping narratives across different genres. His work reflects his skill in creating tension-filled atmospheres and portraying complex characters, establishing him as a versatile and acclaimed director in the industry.

“Sugar Bandits” was initially announced in 2013, with Universal developing the feature. The movie, now making waves in the independent market, presents a unique opportunity for buyers. While a director is yet to be attached, the script has already garnered positive attention, marking a significant move for Smith in the indie film scene since his memorable Oscar moment in 2022.
