Diana Taurasi has probably seen everything there’s to see in basketball, particularly in the WNBA. The former No. 1 pick has been in the league since 2004 and will likely stay on for at least next year. She doesn’t seem impressed by anything even when it’s something that will be a game-changer for many.
This season, league commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced that teams will have chartered flights for road games in the regular season. Previously, the luxury was given only during the playoffs. Most of the players couldn’t hide their excitement with the development.
Diana Taurasi and Co. have spent four of their first seven games on the road. They are one of several teams who have been using the chartered flights since the season started. When asked to comment about the experience, the 2009 MVP deadpanned via (Doug Feinberg):
“It’s a plane.”
Reporters who covered Taurasi for most of her two-decade stint in the WNBA took the matter-of-fact response in their stride. A few were likely surprised that she wasn’t as impressed or thrilled as some of her fellow players.
The blunt response from the three-time WNBA champ may have something to do with the Phoenix Mercury’s record away from the desert. They have won just once in four games away from their home court.
The Mercury had an eye-opening 98-88 win in Sin City against the Las Vegas Aces on May 22. However, Taurasi’s group was humiliated 70-47 against the Sun in Connecticut on Tuesday.
Diana Taurasi and her teammates had a much better game against the New York Liberty less than 24 hours after the debacle versus Connecticut. They still fell short, though, losing 81-78 as the hosts got a superlative performance from Jonquel Jones.

After a two-game East Coast swing, Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury were on a chartered plane again going West. They will cap off their road trip with a stop in Minnesota to face the Lynx. Phoenix will hope to snap out of a three-game losing streak when they square off against the hosts.
Phoenix will look to avoid going down a big hole early in the game as it did versus the New York Liberty.
Taurasi, Kahleah Copper and Natasha Cloud led a couple of rallies but couldn’t cap off the game with a victory. They should be wary of a strong start by Minnesota who will try to recover from a devastating 80-66 loss to the Aces on Wednesday.
