Jermani Thompson had a long life ahead of her, but it tragically came to an end during a freak accident at the airport where she worked.

The former basketball player at Hesston College in Kansas was working as a baggage handling supervisor Tuesday night when her team began unloading a Frontier flight. According to her employer, Thompson’s hair got tangled in the machinery of the belt loader. She was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

She was only 26 years old.

“We extend our deepest condolences following the tragic death of a death member of our ground handling business partner,” an airline spokesperson told Nola.com in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Thompson worked for GAT Airline Ground support, reports said.

“We are heartbroken and are supporting her family and her friends as best we are able to,” GAT CEO Mike Hough told nola.com.

Her grieving mom told the news outlet that Thompson was an accomplished basketball player, who had played as Hesston College in Kansas and Tougaloo College in Mississippi.

“She was my baby girl. Everybody loved her,” Angela Dorsey told Nola.com in an interview Wednesday. “I’m just lost for words. I can’t even think.”
