Hailey and Justin Bieber have been mostly private about their journey to parenthood — until their announcement of their pregnancy in May 2024.

The “Love Yourself” singer and model got married in September 2018 after dating on-and-off for about two years. Since then, internet sleuths have suspected at various points throughout their marriage that Hailey might be expecting, which she’d denied every time, explaining she preferred to keep the news to herself when it did happen.

In October 2023, Hailey told GQ Hype that while she wants to be private about when she becomes pregnant, motherhood “is something that I look forward to.”

“It’s also such a private, intimate thing. It’s something that’s going to come when it comes,” she said. “And it’s just, honestly, at the end of the day, so hilarious how much people f—— care. Let me do what I want with my body and you guys can do what you want to do with your body — and let’s just let it be that.”

Just six months later, in May 2024, Hailey and Justin shared their happy news on Instagram, along with photos from their vow renewal ceremony. Both posted the same carousel on their respective accounts, simply tagging the other in their captions.

Hailey said she wasn’t in a rush to have kids shortly after getting married

Justin and Hailey got married after a two-month engagement on Sept. 13, 2018. However, just two months later, she told Vogue Arabia that she didn’t have plans to have kids “anytime soon.”

“I love kids and I can’t wait to have my own,” Hailey said. “I would say that now, that’s a closer reality, but definitely not anytime soon.”

Justin has been open about wanting to try for a baby

Justin shared several times early into his marriage with Hailey that he was looking forward to becoming a father but was also not in a rush.

“I want to start my own family, in due time,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in February 2020. “I want to enjoy being married for a little bit, go on tour, be married, enjoy traveling with just us, build more of our relationship.”

He added in December 2020 while on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that though he was excited to welcome his own brood of kids, he wanted to respect Hailey’s timeline.

“I am going to have as many as Hailey is wishing to push out,” Justin said. “I’d love to have myself a little tribe. But, yeah, it’s her body and whatever she wants to do. … I think she wants to have a few.”

After the comedian asked what the couple were waiting for, Justin replied, “There’s not really an issue.”

“But I think Hailey still has some things she wants to accomplish as a woman, and I think … she’s just not ready yet,” he said. “And that’s okay.”

In October 2021, Justin’s documentary, Justin Bieber: Our World, was released and in one clip, he expressed his desire to have kids.

“My intention for 2021 is to continue to set goals and have fun while doing them. Make sure I put my family first and hopefully we squish out a nugget,” he told Hailey the morning before his New Year’s Eve 2020 concert.

“In 2021?” she replied, to which Justin clarified he meant to “start trying” in 2021.

“We shall see,” Hailey replied.

Hailey shut down pregnancy rumors multiple times

Since the beginning of their relationship, Hailey was often barraged with rumors that she was pregnant, which she often shut down.

In July 2021, fans quickly speculated that she and Justin were expecting after he posted a photo of the two of them on Instagram with the caption “mom and dad.”

Hailey clarified the rumors in the comment section of the post, writing, “I think you should maybe change this caption to Dog Mom and Dad before anyone gets it twisted .”

Less than a year later, the Rhode founder once again clapped back at internet sleuths after many speculated she was pregnant when she wore a flowy dress to the 2022 Grammy Awards in February. She left a comment on a fan’s Instagram post speculating she was pregnant, writing, “I’m not pregnant leave me alone.”

Hailey admitted she gets “scared” of the idea of having kids

By May 2023, Hailey admitted that she was “scared” to have kids due to how public her life was.

“I literally cry about this all the time,” she told The Sunday Times. “I want kids so bad but I get scared. It’s enough that people say things about my husband or my friends. I can’t imagine having to confront people saying things about a child.”

Hailey said she “looks forward” to motherhood in October 2023

Hailey opened up to GQ Hype in an October 2023 cover story, addressing new rumors that she was pregnant again.

“Recently, everybody was like, ‘Oh my God, she’s pregnant,’ and that’s happened to me multiple times before,” she said. “There is something that’s disheartening about, damn, I can’t be bloated one time and not be pregnant? It would be a lie if I was like, ‘Oh yeah, I don’t give a s—.’ “

She added that whenever she did get pregnant, she would keep that information to herself as long as possible.

“When there comes a day that that is true, you, you as in the internet, will be the last to know,” she said.

While she said she originally wanted to raise her future kids out of the spotlight, she knew that was “probably totally unavoidable” now.

“Maybe I liked the idea at 18 of not raising kids around certain things, but my life is so different now than it was when I was 18,” she said. “It’s so hard to say what I’m going to do or not do when there isn’t even a child here yet. I don’t even know what it feels like to be a parent other than a dog parent yet. And that’s not the same thing, by any means.”

On May 9, 2024, Justin and Hailey put rumors to bed when they announced they were expecting their first child together in a carousel of photos of their vow renewal in Hawaii. A source told PEOPLE the day they found out was “the best day for them,” and shared Hailey was already 6 months pregnant.

The pair already have a name picked out, the source added, and could not be more excited.

“Everyone is excited for them,” the source said. “They will be great parents, and Justin will be super involved. This will be the next important project for him. He’s so excited to raise his baby. They have a name that they think is perfect. They’re also starting to decorate a nursery. They can’t wait to meet the baby.”

As Hailey promised, the internet was the last to know as she already shared the happy news with her family and friends.

“They have both been very emotional about it. They feel so blessed,” the source said. “They’ve also felt very protective of the baby from the moment they found out. They shared with family and close friends early on. It was very important for them to keep it quiet and just enjoy [it] for as long as possible before they publicly confirmed.”
