LA Sparks rookie Cameron Brink struggled to find her offense in her first game against former collegiate rival Angel Reese. She scored just seven points as the Sparks slumped to an 83-73 loss on the road against the Chicago Sky on Thursday.

The second overall pick in this year’s WNBA Draft out of Stanford University, Brink played 23 minutes against the Sky and went 2-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line for her seven points. She had six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block in addition to it but had a team-high four turnovers.

Cameron Brink’s LSU rival Reese did not have a good scoring game as well, ending up with just six points on 3-of-8 shooting in 25 minutes. She did, however, have six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Dearica Hamby led the way for the Sparks (2-5) with a double-double of 24 points and 13 rebounds, with veteran guard Kia Nurse adding 17 points.

For Chicago, Marina Mabrey led four Sky players with 14 points or more, finishing with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting from three. Elizabeth Williams, Dana Evans and Chennedy Carter backstopped her with 17, 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Cameron Brink and the Sparks play the last stop of their three-game road trip on Sunday against the Phoenix Mercury at the Footprint Center in Arizona.

Cameron Brink believes 2024 rookie class is special but highlights respect for veterans

Cameron Brink is proud and excited to be part of a deep rookie class for 2024, which also includes fellow collegiate standouts Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. However, she was quick to say that she has a lot of respect for the league veterans, who paved the way for players like her to realize their WNBA dreams.

The LA Sparks rookie shared this in her recent appearance on NBA All-Star Paul George’s Podcast P, where she touched on a number of things as she began her career as a professional basketball player.

Former Stanford star Brink shared her draft class and the huge attention it has been getting:

“I’m not gonna lie, it’s all been confusing, to be honest. It’s like, why now? And I really do think it has to do with the media. Where they water the grass, it grows. I think our draft class is special, but there are so many many draft classes before us that have been just as talented.”

Cameron Brink went on to emphasize the significant role that the veterans play in the overall scheme of things in the WNBA, saying:

“I just hope the vets know — and I’ve been vocal about this, but I hope they know that it’s so much respect from my end … It’s all respect on my end, and I hope they know it’s because of them we’re here now.”

Brink was selected second overall in this year’s WNBA Draft and has been steady as a starter with averages of 9.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.7 blocks (team-high), 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 25 minutes of play.
