Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese recently picked up a narrow one-point win over Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever on Sunday. The game served as the third meeting between the two WNBA stars and marked Reese’s first win over Clark at the WNBA level. While they still have one more meeting on the calendar in August, that game will be played after the WNBA’s Olympic break.
After a narrow one-point loss in the pair’s first WNBA meeting, and an eight-point loss in their meeting earlier this month, Angel Reese and the Sky wanted a win. On Sunday, the Sky hosted the Fever in Chicago for an extremely competitive game that saw momentum swing back and forth between the two teams.
After a big fourth-quarter rally, the Sky were able to capture an 88-87 win over the Fever thanks to a pair of clutch late-game free throws from Chennedy Carter. In the case of Angel Reese, the standout rookie posted a double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds on 66.7% from the field.
The career-high in scoring from Reese earned her widespread praise from fans and analysts alike while pushing her record to 2-3 vs Clark including NCAA games. The morning after the Sky’s win, Reese took to social media to react:
“It’s literally a blessing I get to wake up everyday and play the game I love as my job”
“It’s just good competition,” – Angel Reese opens up on Caitlin Clark rivalry following narrow win on Sunday
The on-court rivalry between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese goes all the way back to the pair’s college days. When Reese was competing for LSU, and Clark was competing for Iowa the pair famously met in the NCAA March Madness Finals.
The competitive game, which saw Angel Reese and LSU pick up a big win, kickstarted their rivalry, partly due to Reese’s celebratory taunting. This year, it was Clark and Iowa who got revenge, eliminating LSU en route to the NCAA Championship, where they lost to South Carolina.
Since the Reese-Clark duo entered the WNBA, their competitive rivalry has continued, with their two previous regular-season meetings leading up to Sunday’s game delivering fireworks. While there has been plenty of talk regarding the pair having beef with one another off the court, that isn’t the case.
Back in March, Angel Reese made it clear in an interview with ESPN that she had no real beef with Clark, and the pair have no animosity for one another. Following Sunday’s clash between the Sky and the Fever, Reese spoke to media members about the win, and her rivalry with Clark:
“It’s just good competition. I’m happy. I mean, they still got us. They got one up on us, so I’m just happy for the team. I don’t wanna make it about us. I just want our team….Chicago, they came out tonight, so I’m just happy for us.”
The pair will clash once more this season on Aug. 30 when the Sky host the Fever just two weeks after WNBA play resumes following the Olympic break.
