Las Vegas Aces slipped to 5-5 record after loss against Minnesota Lynx.
Defending champions Las Vegas Aces suffered their third consecutive loss during the WNBA Commissioner’s Cup against the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday. However, Aces’ superstar A’ja Wilson is not sweating over the team’s inconsistent start to the season. Becky Hammon’s team slipped to 5-5 after their 100-86 defeat.
“This is a long, long, long season. I’m not going to press the panic button. I’m still going to bet on us. I know exactly what’s in that locker room,” Wilson said [via ESPN].
The defending champions were hit with an offensive onslaught from the Lynx. In the first two quarters combined, the Aces conceded 59 points. Their offense was good on the night, but defensively, Becky Hammon’s team struggled immensely.
Minnesota’s players cashed in on Las Vegas’ lack of effort on defense, with all five Lynx’s starters scoring at least 14 points.
Wilson recognized the urgency to improve on the defensive end if the two-time champions hoped to achieve a 3-peat:
“It’s not going to get easier. It has never been easy for us. We’re going to continue to be us, continue to grind it out,” Wilson said.
“It’s our defense [biggest problem]. That’s what we’ve always hung our hat on. We’ve won the last two years because of defense,” she added.
Aces’ star point guard Chelsea Gray is still undergoing rehabilitation for a leg injury she sustained in last year’s WNBA Finals, as the team looks to turn their fortunes around.
The good news for the team is that the cavalry is coming. Gray is expected to make a comeback soon and could even return before the Olympic break.
A’ja Wilson is doing her job
Aces’ topsy-turvy start to the season isn’t all on Wilson’s shoulder. She has been doing all that is in her power, if not more, to drag her team to the promised land.
Against Minnesota, Wilson scored 28 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. Her efforts once again went in vain, just like they did in the previous two games against the Seattle Storm and LA Sparks.
Wilson is enjoying a historic start to the season. She currently leads the league in scoring and averages 28.3 points per game. She is also tied with Dearica Hamby as the joint leader in rebounds (11.4).
Furthermore, she is the first player in history to average 25+ points and 10+ rebounds to start a WNBA season. Despite all the personal accolades and milestones, Wilson’s performances have not translated enough into wins for the Aces.
Wilson and Co. will look to stem the bleeding when they face the Phoenix Mercury (6-6) at Footprint Arena on Thursday.
