Hemsworth’s performance in Extraction proves he’s perfect for G.I. Joe, showcasing his skills in massive battle scenes and extreme action.

Chris Hemsworth may be one of the stars of the upcoming cinematic crossover between Transformers and G.I. Joe, but his action-franchise on Netflix proves he’d be better utilized as a Joe rather than a Transformer. The upcoming crossover between G.I. Joe and Transformers franchises was teased in the final moments of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, setting up the Joes as a potential counter to the Transformers continued existence on Earth. Now, the movie is moving forward, and it’s been confirmed that it could Chris Hemsworth’s next big franchise.

At the time of this writing, it hasn’t been revealed who Hemsworth could be potentially playing in the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover. Given his wealth of experience in the film industry, there are several roles from both franchises that he could fit neatly into. He’s even already technically joined the Transformers franchise, playing the young Optimus Prime in the upcoming animated film Transformers One. However, two action-movies starring Hemsworth that became smash-hits for Netflix prove why Hemsworth should be leading the charge against the Transformers instead of playing one of them in the crossover.

Chris Hemsworth Is Joining The Transformers/G.I. Joe Crossover Movie

Hemsworth Is Currently In Talks To Star In The Franchise Crossover

Hemsworth’s tenure in the Extraction series proves he’d be better utilized as one of the Joes instead of voicing a Transformer in the upcoming franchise crossover. Hemsworth’s inclusion in the crossover film makes sense, given the actor’s star-power and blockbuster experience. While Hemsworth hasn’t yet appeared in the G.I. Joe franchise, he is one of the stars of the upcoming animated film Transformers One. In that film, Hemsworth plays Orion Pax, the Cybertron citizen who eventually grows up to be Optimus Prime.

Because of this connection, it’s easy to assume that Hemsworth’s role in the crossover would be as one of the Transformers. However, the crossover seems to be building off the events of the live-action Transformers movies, like 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. The animated prequel is a stand-alone movie, with Transformers One in a different continuity from the live-action Transformers films. As a result, Hemsworth could easily be one of the G.I Joe characters instead — and actually already has had the perfect practice for it in another film series.

Netflix’s Extraction Was Basically A Test Run To Be A G.I. Joe

The Action Of Extraction Would Fit Perfectly Into A Big-Screen G.I. Joe RebootChris-Hemsworth-as-Tyler-Rake-from-Extraction-II-and-Optimus-Prime-from-Transformers-One

The Extraction series on Netflix is an explosive and action-packed franchise that stars Chris Hemsworth. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Extraction focuses on Tyler Rake a former Australian Army SASR operator turned merenary who finds himself on nigh-impossible missions. The series features massive battle scenes that force Rake to utilize his skills with guns, knives, and any other weapons he can get his hands on to contend with a seemingly endless sea of enemy soldiers. The Extraction films are over-the-top and feature extreme action set-pieces that would feel right at home in the G.I. Joe franchise.

Both franchises utilize military connections to give their characters believable backgrounds, justifying their litany of skills and noble but hardened personalities. Extraction 2 pushed the action to an extreme, with Hemsworth’s Rake fighting mobs of criminals while on fire and using massive machine guns against helicopters. Those films effectively worked as a dry run for what a G.I Joe movie could look like with modern technology and filming practices. Hemsworth proved especially adept at that kind of action, making him an ideal star to take the lead in a new version of G.I. Joe.

Hemsworth Playing A Joe Would Be Less Confusing Than Voicing A Transformer

Hemsworth Is Already Voicing A Transformer In Another Continuity

Theoretically, Hemsworth could appear in the upcoming Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover voicing one of the Transformers. However, given the connections to the live-action Transformers films, it’s likely that Peter Cullen will be returning to play Optimus Prime. As a result, having Hemsworth as another Transformer might make things slightly confusing. Instead, it would make more sense to see Hemsworth going up against the Transformers as one of the Joes. It would utilize the skill-set he developed in the Extraction films and build off his previous blockbuster experience. Having Hemsworth only appear in the film for a vocal performance would feel like a waste of the actor’s action-film talents.

Instead, casting him as one of the Joes would utilize the full scope of his physicality to greater effect. Hemsworth has the experience to feel believable on that large of a scale, especially in the kind of bombastic military-style set-pieces that the G.I. Joe franchise are built for. Thanks to Hemsworth’s time in the Extraction films, Hemsworth playing one of the Joes in the franchise crossover makes perfect sense, especially if he took on one of the more important roles within the Joes organization. It would fit better into the likely bombastic action of the film, and give the Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover some inherent star-power.
