The Kansas City Chiefs have been making plenty of negative headlines in the offseason. Harrison Butker’s viral comments at a commencement ceremony circulated the internet. On top of that, the legal situation surrounding Rashee Rice is at the forefront of the team’s questions with OTAs going on.

On Wednesday, Patrick Mahomes spoke about the situation with Rice and admitted they are trying to help him in any way possible, per the team’s press conference video release.

“It’s not just me. Just trying to do whatever we can to teach him how to learn from his mistakes. Obviously, that was a big mistake. You get to learn from it and make sure it doesn’t happen again and try to do whatever you can to be the best person you can be in society, not only for yourself but for the people around you. I think he is doing that. Right now, we’re just going to keep trying to do whatever we can to get him on the right path, so that he can be a great football player, obviously, but we want to be a great person, too.”

Rice was involved in a car crash and is facing serious legal repercussions as well as a potential suspension from the NFL.

Chiefs offseason drama continues

It has been a whirlwind of a few weeks for some Chiefs players, and the negative attention definitely isn’t what the franchise wanted. Roger Goodell spoke about the comments from Butker, as did Mahomes and Andy Reid on Wednesday. But, Mahomes made sure to send a message to the team about what needs to change

“It’s just about being as smart as we can when we’re not in the building. I think guys understand we have to step up as a team and an organization in that way. But we have to go out and prove that for other people to believe that as well.”

Butker’s comments have surely ruffled a lot of feathers. Now, the situation with Rice could result in a lengthy suspension from one of the team’s playmakers, so both of these developments are not what the reigning Super Bowl champions were hoping for going into OTAs. Rice emerged as a reliable option for Mahomes, catching 79 passes for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie year, including six catches for 39 yards in the Super Bowl win.
