WNBA referees missed multiple violations by Angel Reese during Thursday’s win over the Dallas Wings, highlighting both the lack of experience held by Reese and the lack of quality within the league’s officiating ranks.

During the third quarter of the Chicago Sky‘s 83-72 victory, Reese intercepted a pass, and what followed was almost comical.

The former LSU star appeared to commit two double dribbles, carried the ball, and likely traveled, yet not a single violation was called, as per Outkick

Of course, the NBA hasn’t been able to escape suggestions of similarly poor refereeing, with many considering Luka Doncic’s style of gaining shooting fouls to be a prime example of traveling that isn’t called.

However, Reese managed to drive down the court for a layup instead of being called for the travel and surrendering possession of the ball.

WNBA has unwanted reputation for poor officiating

The WNBA is notorious for its poor officiating, and this game was no exception, further adding fuel to the fire that rages amongst fans with regards to the officials’ standards.

It’s difficult to argue against this reputation given the events of this season. Caitlin Clark has been repeatedly fouled without calls, Kelsey Plum took a hard hit with no foul given, and now Reese committed several violations without the referees blowing the whistle.

As egregious as Reese‘s uncalled violations were, the missed foul on Kelsey Plum stands out as particularly inexplicable. She was practically being dragged around the court and the WNBA refs did nothing.

The examples of incompetence and poor officiating are piling up. The standard of officiating in the WNBA needs to improve drastically. The league is finally getting some attention, but it’s only highlighting the referees’ shortcomings day after day.
