KANSAS City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is looking to tap into his baseball background ahead of the 2024 NFL season.

The three-time Super Bowl champion, 28, is the son of former MLB pitcher Pat Mahomes and a 2014 draft pick by the Detroit Tigers.

But while Mahomes has left his baseball career behind, he clearly hasn’t forgotten his pitching skills.

During Wednesday’s mandatory minicamp, the two-time NFL MVP was captured attempting to knuckleball the football over to backup quarterback Chris Oladokun.

Mahomes’ bizarre pitch quickly spread on X, formerly known as Twitter, with the Chiefs asking, “How’s his form looking, [Kansas City Royals]?”

“I’m trying to learn the knuckleball the [Matt] Waldron dude from the [San Diego] Padres throws,” explained Mahomes in a retweet along with a series of laughing emojis.

Thankfully for Mahomes, Waldron later chimed in with some advice.

“Just a little more MVP touch. Don’t make it too hard on the receivers!” he said.

Mahomes subsequently reshared Waldron’s response, after which another X user shared a side-by-side comparison of the two pitches.

“Nasty!!!!” Mahomes said of the less-than-flattering clip, again accompanied by a trio of laughing emojis.

Fans, however, saw more than just shades of Waldron in Mahomes’ throw.

“My man trying to be like Nestor Cortez,” wrote one fan.

“The Cueto leg kick with the Matt Waldron Knuckleball?? I like that,” said a second.

While former Chiefs lineman Mitchell Schwartz joked, “Hideo Nomo mixed with a Johnny Cueto shimmy.”

As for one San Francisco 49ers fan, with their Super Bowl LVIII loss to Mahomes and Co. still clearly lingering, they added, “Mahomes will recreate this throw in the next Superbowl, in overtime, down by 5, with 3 seconds to play, for a touchdown. – A sad 49er fan.”

The Chiefs will conclude their offseason schedule with the final day of mandatory minicamp on Thursday before their summer break.

Next up will be training camp which should commence sometime between mid to late July.

Kansas City’s preseason schedule will kick off on August 10 at the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Home games against the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears follow to close out the preseason.

The Chiefs will host the season opener on September 8 against the Baltimore Ravens.

Mahomes and Co. will be hoping that this season they can become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls.
